Happy Day 2 of the Children’s Creative Summer Challenge!
Today, our starting point is turning a plain plastic bag into a bright eco‑kite. But remember: this is only one idea—a springboard for imagination. Whether your child makes a fluttering kite, a dancing windsock, or something totally unexpected, we can’t wait to see what you dream up.
Why make an eco-kite?
Making an eco-kite is a brilliant way to reuse everyday items and give them a second life. Instead of tossing out that old carrier bag, you’re transforming it into a colourful, flying creation. Plus, it’s a fantastic opportunity to talk about sustainability with your child.
Crafting together boosts confidence, encourages problem-solving, and brings out those brilliant creative ideas. And when the craft leads to an outdoor adventure? Even better!
What You’ll Need:
One old plastic bag or carrier bag (without holes!)
Scissors
2 thin sticks or paper straws
Masking tape
Ribbon or fabric strips
String
Top Tip:
Bright ribbons or colourful scraps of fabric make beautiful kite tails – the longer the tail, the more dramatic it looks as it twirls through the sky!
How to make your eco-kite:
- Cut out your kite shape
Take your plastic bag and cut it into a diamond shape. Don’t worry too much about perfection – any size or shape will fly if balanced! - Add the structure
Flip the plastic over and lay your sticks or paper straws in a cross from corner to corner. Use masking tape to stick them down securely. - Decorate your kite tail
Attach a long ribbon or strip of fabric to the bottom corner. Tie on extra pieces to create a fluttery, fabulous tail. - Tie the string
Where the sticks cross, loop your string around and tie a strong double knot. This is where you’ll hold your kite while flying. - Fly your creation!
Head outside to an open space and give it a go! Running helps lift the kite, so prepare for some giggles and lots of movement.
Learning through play
This eco kite craft for kids isn’t just fun – it’s educational too. As your child builds and flies their kite, they’ll explore how wind works, discover balance, and practise fine motor skills. It’s a brilliant way to mix science and creativity into one playful experience.
And let’s be honest – there’s nothing quite like seeing something you made with your own hands soar through the sky!
Share to Win!
